Health facilities across Nairobi recorded 2,214 live births in August 2026, with Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Embakasi recording the highest number, according to Ministry of Health data.

Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital recorded 447 live births, followed by Pumwani Maternity Hospital in Kamukunji with 386, and Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital in Embakasi North with 275.

The figures show a wide variation in live births across the 24 health facilities captured in the Ministry of Health data, with the highest recording facility registering hundreds of live births while two facilities recorded just one each.

Public facilities account for nearly four in five live births

Public facilities dominated the upper end of the list.

The 13 public facilities in the dataset recorded a combined 1,740 live births, accounting for 78.6 per cent of the total.

The 11 private facilities recorded 474 live births, representing 21.4 per cent. Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital led all facilities with 447 live births, while Pumwani Maternity Hospital recorded 386.

Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital followed with 275, while Mbagathi District Hospital in Kibra recorded 175.

Mimosa Cottage Hospital in Roysambu was the highest ranked private facility, with 176 live births, placing it fourth overall and just one live birth ahead of Mbagathi District Hospital.

Aga Khan Hospital in Westlands was the second-highest private facility, with 130 live births.

From 447 live births to one

The data reveals a significant gap between facilities at the top and bottom of the list.

Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital recorded 446 more live births than Jesse Kay Children’s Hospital in Roysambu and Tuungane Woodley Hospital in Kibra, which each recorded one live birth.

The three leading facilities that is Mama Lucy Kibaki, Pumwani Maternity and Mama Margaret Uhuru hospitals accounted for 1,108 live births, exactly half of all the live births recorded across the 24 facilities.

The figures, however, should not be interpreted as a ranking of the quality of maternity services.

The public private divide

The figures show that public facilities recorded almost four times as many live births as the private facilities included in the dataset. The 1,740 live births recorded in public facilities compare with 474 in private facilities.

The difference is largely driven by the three leading public facilities. Mama Lucy Kibaki, Pumwani Maternity and Mama Margaret Uhuru hospitals alone recorded 1,108 live births, or 50 per cent of the 2,214 total.

Among private facilities, Mimosa Cottage Hospital led with 176 live births, followed by Aga Khan Hospital with 130 and Trans Marigold Hospital with 63.

The remaining private facilities each recorded fewer than 30 live births.

What the August data tells us

The Ministry of Health figures provide a snapshot of the distribution of live births across selected health facilities in Nairobi in August 2026.

They show a maternity system with substantial differences in the number of live births recorded from one facility to another, while public facilities accounted for the overwhelming majority of the births in this dataset.
